i have a '99 tahoe, the check engine light came

i have a '99 tahoe, the check engine light came on. took to a shop-machine states needs a O2 sensor. I have 4 ( 2 in front and 2 in rear) We changed the ones in the rear. the check engine comes on every now and then and you can smell the gas fumes and the exhaust has black sutt inside. smells like it is burning the fuel too rich.    any ideas?
