I have a 1994 olds cutlass supreme with a 3.4 liter DOHC ...

Sent to Car Experts March 05, 2006 11:28 a.m.

I have a 1994 olds cutlass supreme with a 3.4 liter DOHC engine. The problem I am having may be from one or numerous sources, however I have met someone with the same car and the same problems and invested >$1000 to attempt to repair it to no avail, I am not sure what she replaced. The car starts very rough after sitting and the idle will shoot up to around 5 RPMs and immediately drop past one often shutting the car down. The only way to keep it from bogging out is to hit the gas as it drops. After you hit the gas once or twice it won't drop low enough to shut off. It will ususally go up and down for around 10 minutes just not as high or low. The exaust will putter during this. The funny thing is that it will stop doing this after the car warms up, even if you shut it off and let it sit for an hour. Even so I am only getting around 11 mpg city or highway, not sure if this is related. So far I have changed the plugs, wires, fuel filter, fuel pump and throttle position sensor with no improvements. thanks.

It comes on occasionally before you start driving. It then goes off. This only occures one out of maybe 6-7 starts.

REPLIED Check Mark

You need to check for codes if the light came on there is probably a code or codes. They could lead you to the source of the problem.

Check Engine Light That is a warning light that comes on if the computerized engine control system detects an engine performance or emissions problem. Also called the "malfunction indicator lamp" (MIL). To determine the nature of the problem, the computer system must be accessed to read the codes that are stored in them.

Then the code is used to execute the repairs needed.

you can get your codes read free at autozone free, but don't buy anything yet as the counter guys at autozone are parts guys not mechanics. Post the codes back here (in the order they were retrieved) then we can help you with your problem.

Perform this test on cold engine:

1. Unplug the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor, start the engine and cover the throttle body opening with a block of wood. The idle should drop to about 500 RPM. If it is higher, there is a vacuum leak.

2. Check for a vacuum leak at the lower intake manifold gasket when the engine is cold.

The rear lower intake gasket has a habit of leaking cold only.

Relist: I want a different opinion.
My mechanic already explored this option and it did not fit the pattern of a vaccuum leak at all.

I can't say whether you have really checked it or not but I can say it definately fits the pattern
