i have a 1996 ford escort. the check engine light came on. i tested it with the OBD II autoscanner. the DTC was p1443. the description is "manufacurer contrl. auxiliary emission controls" what exactly does this mean?

so in short i should check all the hoses between the EVAP canister and the intake manifold, then check the individual parts. is there anyway to check the parts to find out if they are working properly with out buying new parts?
