Hi, I have a 1990 Lebaron 3.0 that I have had in to find out what is wrong with it 3 times, no one can tell me. It idles rough and when I'm driving it downshifts on me and the rpms shoot up to 5,000. It won't quit until I either let off on the gas or stomp on it, only to do it again. It sucks gas down like no tomorrow. It recently got a new fuel filter and dist. cap, ran good for about a week, then started acting up again. It is giving the diagnostics no codes. Please help!!!!

Optional Information:
1990 Chrysler Lebaron 3.0

Already Tried:
dist. cap, fuel filter, timing of engine.

Dear Customer (name blocked for privacy),

These kinds of problems can really haunt us.   I had the same problem with my 1995 Mustang GT 5.0, especially after I started racing it at the drag strip. I also had a similar problem with an early model LTD.

The first that should have been checked on this vehicle is the transmission control solenoid. This is the most common cause of what you are describing.

The control valves are essential for a car to operate when ever you push it into passing gear, and down shifting. Sucking gas can be a reflection of inefficient operation due to the valve problem

The next thing I would have them check is the dash pot in the carburator.

Have your anti-emmission system also checked, from engine to tail pipe. These will also affect how your car is using fuel.

What ever you do, start with the transmission (solenoid) and control valves.

Reply to Edward Johnson's Post: The 90' Lebaron is fuel injected. And the solenoid would'nt effect idle in park, but thanks for the reply.

No. I removed a spark plug wire today to see how icky they look, and when I drove it home, (after I plugged it in again), it ran a lot better, but still shifted a lot, only this time the rpm's stayed in a normal range. Maybe plugs? I bought some today, we just need to put them in. Thanks for the reply!!!!

Reply to Hammer Time's Post: No. I removed a plug wire today to check if it was icky, plugged it back in, then drove home. It tried to kill on me at first when I would take off, but it got better as I drove. It didn't shift as much as weird as usual-this time the rpm's stayed in a normal range, it just shifted quite often. I bought new plugs just in case, but havn't put them in yet. Maybe fouled plugs I hope!!!
