Sent to Car Experts October 21 10:14 PM

2000 olds alero 2.4 liter, the engine soon light is on , auto zone says it is a seal, they thought gas cap was loose but i put a new cap on, still didn't solve the problem, the light did go off for about 3 days but came on and has stayed on , they said something about it just being a seal, but which one?the other question is could it be the fuel pressure regulator by chance, i did get some contamaited gas a few months back and they put a sock over the filter in the tank. or maybe a valve sticking and if so which one and where do i look for it?.. Rita

Optional Information: 2000 Oldsmobile alero 2.4
Already Tried:
new gas cap , auto zone says it's a seal leak or small fuel leak but i smell no gas and there is no puddle under the car when i park it

Who put the sock over the filter in the tank? Did the check engine light come on after they did that? If the code is a small leak - that is telling you that there is a small evaporitive leak and that the tank cannot hold vacuum properly.

I have had trouble with after market gas caps not working correctly but before you try a dealer one I would wonder if whoever put the sock on resealed the tank properly...

Reply to Wes Harrison's Post: the engine soon light didn't come on right away after they made reapirs to the car when they put a sock on it. it was about 3 weeks to a month afterwards. i too wondered if it may be that the tank wasn't resealed right. so it couldn't be the fuel pressure regulator at all or a valve that would cause low pressure going back to the tank?
