how can I check the timing on my 99 chev tahoe

MARK YOUR DIST, BEFORE AND AFTER YOU PULL IT UP. SENT UP REPLACEMENT SAME WAY, THATS HALF THE BATTLE. THE TIMMING IS SET BY PCM, CK,CAN BE CK,AFTER MOTOR WARMED UP IN CLOSED LOOP MODE . WITH A SCANNER

So the only way to know if the timing is fine is to use a scanner. cant you use a timing light?
