90 Eclipse won't start

Sent to Car Experts August 07 01:57 PM

My 1990 Eclipse won't start. It was driving fine and then the check engine light came on and it stopped. It tries to crank but does not start. We checked the fuel pump, fuel pump relay, MPI relay, timing belt, all OK. Thinking it might be the ECM we put ECM from working 1990 Laser but still doesn't start. Right now we think it could be the cam/crank angle position sensor. Is there a check for this sensor? What are the steps to   replace it?
Thanks HM

You need to first test a few functions during the failure.

1) Test for spark at the plug end of the wire using a spark tester.
2) Test for injecter pulse using a small bulb called a noid light.
3) Use a fuel pressure gauge to test for correct fuel pressure.

Once you have determined which of these functions has dropped out,
you will know which system is having the problem.

Reply to Hammer Time's Post: The check list you gave helped trace the problem to a bad ignition coil and power transitor.
