Question

I'm stumped

Sent to Car Experts June 17, 2005 7:59 p.m.

Where to start? I was driving my jeep (1995 2.5L) when my water pump went out. So I changed the water pump and replaced the Timing chain cover, and oil pan gaskets while I had the jeep apart (they were both leaking a little oil). I got every thing back together and started it up. The engine then started to idle at 2500 RPM and was making this loud squealing noise. My first though was that some how I screwed up my timing. Then I found out that I couldn't adjust the timing on my jeep (I guess it can only be done on carbureted modules). I then called my friend over to see if he could help me figure out what I had done wrong. While we were trouble shooting the problem we noticed that there were air bubbles in the system (because the radiator cap was off and was squirting water out). My friend said that it looked like I cooked my head gasket and was getting air in the system. So after consulting with some other people who agreed with him I changed the head gasket, and the intake manifold gasket. Then I got it all put back together and fired it up the squealing was gone but the engine still idled at 2500 rpm. I am now stumped and can’t figure out where I went wrong. Any suggestions?

Many possibilities here. Is the check engine light coming on?

Yes, but the codes don't make any sense to me. It says: battery power to PCM was disconected (duh, I was working on the engin), an open or shorted condition edtected in the A/C clutch relay circuit (i don't have A/C), battery under voltage.

Clear them and see what resets.

Even the low battery code?

Is the battery low?

Yes even the battery code. The battery is less than a year old.

ACCEPTED Check Mark

Yes, that issue needs to be resolved. If you have full 12v battery voltage, when running also, you have an issue with voltage in the PCM and you'll have to find out why. If the battery really is low, then resolve that. either way, it the ECM is not seeing enough voltage, it will explain your problems. Now make sure you didn't mess up any of the battery leads, especially any small ones that could be shorting on something.

Check all you fusable links and any other power sources. Check to make sure you didn't leave off any enginge grounds also.
