What happens if you let your car registration lapse?

Sent to Car Experts April 23 03:24 PM

I do not want to sell my car, but instead just want to put in into storage. My car registration (registered in California) expires next month and I was curious if there were any potential penalties to allowing the car registration to lapse. I moved from California and now live in New York and I do not plan on using the car at all. Once I do, I will re-register the car in New York. Are there any pitfalls to this strategy?
