Question

my car

Sent to Car Experts April 19, 2005 11:38 p.m.

My car (1991 Toyota Camry) was really low on oil and I didn't know it and it started making really a really loud knocking sound and then it stalled. I checked the oil and it was empty but the oil light never came on and I had filled it up recently. I put 3 quarts of oil in and started it back up. It runs but is making knocking sounds whenever the RPM's get past 2000. What happened to it and what can I do for it?

My car doesn't start making the knocking sound until it's at around 3000 RPM not 2000 RPM. It runs fine. It just makes a terrible sound before it shifts gears and right when it starts up. Does that make a difference in the diagnosis?

I really can't afford to spend a thousand bucks on a new engine. Is there any alternative?

Only to the degree of damage done. The cure would still be the same but it may be drivable the way it is for longer until it gets worse, if it does. You might try using a heavier oil and some STP oil treatment to prolong it's life a little.  It could suddenly get worse at any time.
