my car will not go over 30 miles and hour it just started to this this morning on my way to work does this mean my transmission has gone out

 We need more information. What do you drive, year make model engine and auto or manual transmission?

i drive a 98 ford escort i think it's an auto trans it will go all the way to 30 mph but when you try to go over that it acts like it doesn't want to shift gears into second gear and it gets really loud and smoke starts to come from the tail pipe and it smells like something is burning
