Question

rear end

Sent to Car Experts December 18, 2004 12:32 a.m.

My sons car is a 1988 chevy caprice classic. It broke down on the freeway in another city. He got it towed and the guy said it was his rear end since it was leaking fluid in the rear when he arrived. He took it to a machanic who said for a used rear end he would pay $150 for part and $200 for labor. After 2 days the machanic said it needs a new rear end and ordered one. 3 days later he called him to pick-up his car. My son arrived to the tune of $1500. As my son approached his car after paying the money, the machanic said he had transmission problems and my son needs to take it to a transmission place. He drove it and realize he could not get it to shift out of first gear (automatic transmission). I know you can’t diagnose it without seeing it but please tell me something I could tell my son over the phone that may help him deal with that machanic. he has a 91 day warrenty. Please tell me about how a rear end works and what you would do given this situation.

Please  describe the circumstances under which the car broke down on the freeway. The engine quit, the engine ran but the car wouldn't move, there was a loud noise and...., etc.

The engine didn't quit,it made a loud noise in the rear end of the car, then he pulled over. The engine runs and starts fine. When he got it back from the machanic it acted the same way it did before he took it to him ( pulling and not picking up speed, but without the noise). Now the car will not shift out of first gear(automatic transmission) and the machanic is saying it is in the transmission. There was no indications of transmission problems before. Please explain how the rear end works with the transmission and what I can tell him to tell the machanic.

The rear end transfers rotation of the drive shaft to the axles through a series of gears. When a rear end locks up it is as if you are putting the transmission in park while at highway speed. All kids of things can brake in the transmission because of it. I do belive he got bent over on the rear end job (no pun intended) but I can see where the trans could have been damaged by thr rear end failure.
