How do I change the front coil springs on my 1979 Camaro?

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

Fig. 1: When installing the coil spring, make certain that the lower end of the spring is positioned as shown

 

 

  1. Remove the shock absorber. Disconnect the stabilizer bar.

  2. Support the car beneath the frame with jackstands so the control arms hang free.

  3. Support the inner end of the control arm with a floor jack. (Dealers have a device that cradles the inner bushings).

  4. Raise the jack enough to take the tension off the lower control arm pivot bolts.

  5. Chain the spring to the lower control arm.

  6. Remove first the rear, then the front pivot bolt.

  7. Cautiously lower the jack until all spring tension is released.

  8. Note the way in which the spring is installed in relation to the drain holes on the control arm and remove it.

  9. On installation, position the spring to the control arm and raise it into place.

  10. Install the pivot bolts and torque the nuts to 100 ft. lbs.

  11. Reinstall the shock absorber and stabilizer bar.
