what happens if a car is turned off while it is in gear?

Automatic transmission. I could not get the car out of 1st gear. The shift lever on the steering wheel would not move at all. I turned the car off and then tried to move the shifter. It still didn't move. I tried to restart the car and it won't start. I took the key out of the ignition and put on the emergency brake. (Should the key have been able to come out with the car still in gear?)

Did I ruin the car or can it be fixed?
