Question

85 Dodge Caravan Knocking in engine

Sent to Car Experts November 30, 2004 12:08 p.m.

I have a 1985 Dodge Caravan SE 124,000 miles. 4cyl 2.2L. It has a new coil, and voltage regulator. The choke flap on the carbeurator gets stuck so I have to manually take open it to get the car started. I got it open and the car started this morning after about 15 minutes of starting. It refuses to start when it is cold.
After I got the car started and let it warm up for about 10 minutes it is now having a loud knocking noise coming from the engine. It is really loud. It knocks and clanks. The low oil light is on. I checked the oil and it says add. I have to go pick up oil because I don’t have any here. I tried stepping on the gas and the clanking got louder, but the oil light went off. As soon as I let off the gas the oil light came back on and the clanking was still there. Is the clanking because it is low on oil, or is there something else. Since there is oil in there but low is it able to be driven to pick up a couple quarts or no? Should I drive it with that knock? What can that knock be? I appreciate any help you can give me.
