Why does my car sound like a diesel truck?

Hi - Trying to diagnose a noise. (2000 Mazda 626) Car drives fine, but recently, it started sounding like a diesel truck engine when I accelerate. Any ideas? (I'm a female that hates going to the mechanic completely blind, dumb, & vulnerable! So, any suggestions are helpful to give me somewhere to start.) Thanks!
