Question

New A/C system

Sent to Car Experts September 29, 2006 12:41 a.m.

I just had an aftermarket A/C system...Classic Air...installed in my 72 Challenger, all new parts! I drove the car home and the air got hotter and hotter! The car has a brand new aluminum radiator and 2   14" electric fans that are working correctly...temp runs a max of 200 degrees at idle in hot weather. I checked the heater shut off valve and it was not closing all the way. Fixed that! Used a Laser Temp gauge to check hose temps, and the valve is on the hotter of the two lines! I changed that! We checked the R134 and it was about 16 lbs. so we added two cans. It cooled pretty good for about ten miles, then hotter again. Also...the compressor cycles on/off about every 5 seconds. I seem to remember that being an indication of low freon, which to me means a leak in the system.
Would that be a correct assumption, based on the scenario I just outlined?
Thanks....Dick Harrell
