i have a 1997 chevy malibu w/ 2.4 4cyl engine..
the trouble started by not starting easy in the mornings, i would have to crank on it, and turn it off, and do this anywhere up to 5 times before it would go ahead and start. i took to a sh p , they replaced the in tank fuel pump..that didnt fix it . drove it for 4 days.after it was started and running for the day ,it would start normal the rest of the day.. one night after it sit all day it when i went to start it,would start and for appox. 2 seconds.had it towed to the same shop, they said the computer said it was a bad brain box, started and fine home ,next morning it about 10 craacking to get started . any ideas or help on this?           thank you, jerry moss

It sounds like you have a problem with the fuel system pressure bleeding off. The only way to check the problem would be with a fuel pressure gauge. There could be a problem with the new pump that was replaced. There could also be a problem with the fuel injectors or the fuel pressure regulator. Do you have any kind of access to a fuel pressure gauge?

Okay, try this first before we get to that. When you first go to start your car, when it would usually take a long time to start, put the key in and turn it to the on position without starting it. Leave it there for five seconds and then turn it off. Do this a couple of times and on about the fifth time try and start the car and see if it starts any faster. Let me know what happens.

It does still sound like a fuel problem. Most autoparts stores will loan out these kinds of tools. If you can get a hold of one that would be great. That will help us determine if we have a fuel related problem or something else.

The fuel pressure should be 41-47 psi. The main thing we are looking for besides pressure, is if the system actually hold pressure oncew the engine or key is turned off.

there is a vacume pod connected toa steel line that runs across the front of the engine and the other end is hooked into the top w/ vacume line running to the throttle body.? any way while it is idling , if i dissconnect the vacume line , the idle picks up and runs smoother and a little faster, do you think it could be related ?

I highly doubt it because the engine is just kicking up the idle to make up for the vacuum leak. You can try starting it with this unhooked but I am sure they are not related.
