Question

Van won't start

Sent to Car Experts September 16, 2006 5:52 p.m.

My 1996 Ford Windstar van won't start. It won't crank. Last weekend we walked 5 miles home. Battery vottage is okay. Battery post is clean. Battery 2 years old. I just get dash lights and a click when I turn the key. Fuses in car and under hood is okay. Starter was replaced by repair shop 2 years ago in winter time... Prior to failure the van was running or idling rough...Any ideas? Roscoe

Greetings!
sounds like u have a bad starter. Make sure u have batt voltage on both terminals when cranking. If batt voltage is present and the starter is not working, then the starter is bad and will need to be replaced! Just be sure the motor is not locked up. Be sure u can turn it by hand.

Question. Where is the starter. I looked yesterday and did not see it... Roscoe

I assume you are referring to the starter motor not being locked right? If this is the case when the starter is located I will see if I can turn it. Roscoe

I was talking a about the engine. But that is not usually the case. but it does happen The starter motor will be located towards the front of the car underneath the engine.

How do I check to see if the engine will rotate manually? I will check both of your suggestions but will have to do it later or tomorrow for my wife and I have another obligation... Thanks Roscoe

Hi Amedee,

I think I located the started in the front under the engine. Going from the post that I can reach and placing the voltmeter on it and the vans (Body) ground I measured 5-6 volts. Unfortunionately, I can not fit under or reach the other terminal because my hand blocks my view. Perhaps jacking it up will help but time doesn't permit... I will come back to you tomorrow... Amedee,I certainly understand that you are working to try to get me to the finish line. I will honor you by accepting when I get further into the root cause. Your efforts are appreciated! Roscoe

Sounds good! Your right! The starter must be accessed from underneath.

Hello Amedee,

My wife and I decided to tow the van on Tuesday to a repair shop to resolve the matter. I suffer with headaches so I could not do it today. I will accept your answer because you and I both agree that it is the starter. By the way I forgot to mention that the van has 176,000 miles on it so it could be on its last leg so to speak... :) Thanks Roscoe
