Sent to Car Experts September 14, 2006 8:39 a.m.

I just replaced my wifes transmission in her 1999 v6 cougar, with a used one that has 80,000 the car has 150,000 the process went quite well. However ther is a click or a knock that is quite loud coming out of the tranny like the flywheel or torque converter area. I took the dust cover off and noticed it got louder. What do I do? P.S. REPLIED Check Mark

Good Morning

At least you zeroed in on the area where the noise is coming from. It sounds like, and I'm not positively sure, that the flex plate may be cracked. When the plate rotates, and if it has a crack, it will vibrate causing a sound like the one you described. The torque converter itself wouldn't make a sound like this. Unfortunately, you may have to take it apart again to inspect all the parts surrounding that area.

Good Luck

Dan

I think its more of a click or knock every time the flywheel makes a rotation it seems like it hits something. Its not a constant vibration? thanks for the help though

ACCEPTED Check Mark

This is why I mention the fly-wheel (flex-plate) it is a common problem.
