I need to know if there is anything that causes a 1987 lincoln town car to shift into overdrive. I replaced tranny with a good used one and it is still not shifting into overdrve just like the original tranny. The tranny is a automatic overdrive metric i am thinking the mechanic who checked it out was wrong on his diagnosies.

Optional Information:
1987 Lincoln town car 5.0 liter

Already Tried:
replaced tranny

it automatically shifts to overdrive and if you shift lever down it goes into second it has no other way of shifting out of overdrive. a locla mechanic told my parents it was the tranny so i replaced it and now it still wont shift up to overdrive i am thinking maybe the automatic kickdown might be causing the problem just havent checked it yet since the weather has been bad here. but two trannies doing the exact samething is odd. if you cna help me in anyway it would be appreciated thank you Orval

The kick down is out of adjustment. Make sure there are no kinks in the cable and it moves freely. Remove the cable from the throttle body and pull on the cable to insure there is a tension as you pull. Check the adjustment before you hook up the cable to the throttle body, with throttle closed the cable should snap on to where the point just before the cable has tension on it. test drive and adjust cable one notch at a time if any fine tuning is needed.

Reply to Carbdoctor's Post: i completely disconnected the the cable from the tranny and drove it. it still will not shift into overdrive. does the throttle body connection have to tell the engine to let tranny shift. i am very confused on why two trannies act exactly the same and the first one is the original and it just quit going into overdrive. it shifts from first to second manually or automatically but wont shift to third or overdrive. thanks Orval
