1992 Ford Taurus won't steer

My son was driving this car he said he heard a clunk sound and then he was no longer able to steer the car. What are the range of problems that could have caused the problem?

Hi!
There is a large range of problems that could have caused this problem.
Did the car just lose power assist steering?
Is there fluid leaking on the ground and is the power steering reservoir full?
Anything replaced recently in the steering/suspension?
