My 98 Honda Accord, with 167,000 miles, will not start. It cranks and cranks, lights, power windows, radio, all work fine, but it does not start. Is this possible a bad starter and where is it located?

nope do not change the starter , if it was the starter , then the car wouldnt crank , check to see if you have spark , also spray a little carb cleaner inthe throttle body and see if it will start then die out again , if it does then you have a fuel problem , if you have no spark then you have an ignition problem , but something that is very commen on these hondas is the main relay , but lets start doing some testing first .

well a very simple test is to listen for the relay to activate when you put the key in the on position , the relay is under the dash in the farthest most out of reach corner that honda couldve came up with , it is a large black relay , turn the key on , and listen for clicks under the dash , remember not start but on , also you can check to see if the fuel pump is getting power , the main relay supplys power to the fuel pump , if no power at the fuel pump than suspect bad main relay

yes the relay is under the steering side of the dash , do you have a voltmeter to do some tests with ??

Reply to joseph carrillo's Post: Of course not, but I can run out and get one. Since the clicks are not coming frm under the steering, are we at least on the right track for the problem?

possibly , but look at the illustrations i sent you , look at the pic of the main relay , now look underneath the dash , drivers side , find the main relay , put your hand on it , and turn the key to the on position , does it click ?? if not then replace main relay , if it does then we must begin doing some diagnosing , remember to always check all fuses first

ok that eliminates that , know i need for you to spray some carb cleaner into the intake and then try to start the car , see if it starts momentarily, also check for spark at the end of the spark plug wires , find a extra spark plug or pull out a plug from the car , put it at the end of the spark plug wire , ground the plug to the engine and crank , do you have spark , you will need to do these two tests so that we can eliminate the one that is giving us problems, do these two tests seperate from each other please

yes that is correct , takeoff the black air tube hose that comes from the air filter assembley and goes to the throttle body and spray some carb cleaner inside , not very much , just a few squirts will do , you dont have to reinstall the hose back on , just crank and see what happens

Got a new spark plug, fitted it on to the end of the spark plug wires and tried to ground it on a screwdriver, saw no spark. Am I grounding the spark plug right?

sounds like youre doing it correctly , and does sound like a no spark issue , remove the distributer cap and inspect the rotor , also crank the engine and see if the rotor spins .

ok good , then the timing belt is ok , now what you need to do is check for battery voltage to the coil , should be the black / yellow wire , is there battery voltage with key in the on position , or while cranking ?? should have battery voltage , also hook up your meter to both wires at the coil pos and negative and with an analog meter check if you have pulsations while cranking , if you do then replace the coil , if you dont let me know .

did you mean to type cap , if you meant cap and its arching then replace it , and go ahead and put a new rotor also, then crank the car and go get a burger and a coke , well done

ok hold on im confused , so you have spark coming out of the coil correct, but not from where it is supposed to come out of , is that what youre saying , the coil has the only 1 output , that sparks to the distributer cap , is this where the spark came out of?? or did it come out of the side of the coil , can you please remove the blackround cover that covers the coil , you will have to remove rotor .

ok check the distributer cap and see if the button were the coil makes contact with is burned out , , remove the cap , and rotor do you see any arching marks on the coil , shouldnt have any . check to see if the coil is cracked , if not , then you should see a bad distributer cap or worn out rotor.

ok steve remove all four spark plug wires from motor , but leave connected to the distributer cap , now place 4 spark plugs at the ends of the spark plug wires and lay them in order 1234 accross the engine , i want you to crank the engine and verify that all 4 spark plugs are getting a good clean spark , that is constant .

ok steve then lets do this replace , the distributer cap , and rotor .if this doesnt do it then its definitly the coil. thats about all i can tell you buddy , let me know how it goes , because spark is erractic then you probably either have an arching distributer cap , a bad rotor , or the wires are just no good , i almost have a feeling that the rotor button on the distributer cap were the coil makes contact is either missing or broken, you can verify this when you purchase the new cap , start with the cap and rotor , i doubt very much that all wires would go out at the same time , hey by the way , there isnt any oil on the tips of those spark plug wires is there ??
