VW Passat won't start, engine light on/off, just happened over

Sent to Car Experts August 30 01:29 PM

I have a 2002 VW Passat, 60,900 miles. Noticed lately the car smells a bit like gas fumes periodically. Engine light is going on and off intermittently, called the dealership and they said it isn't for the 60,000 mile checkup. Now this morning I stopped at store, and it won't start. Any ideas what it could be? Seems like it is going through a hell of a lot more gas too...(don't see any leaks)

Optional Information:
2002 Volkswagen PASSAT not sure

calling the dealer, of course the typical answer is bring it in...

i haven't encountered a v6 with a stuck open purge valve but have seen it quite a few times on the four cylinder engines..VW has had issues with the purge valve for the evap system sticking and has released revised parts and software that has to be flashed by the dealer...there is also a technical service bulletin about coolant temperature sensors on these cars causing starting problems and excessively rich mixtures...did the car eventually restart?

would the purge valve issue potentially cause fume smells from gas?
