Question

White Smoke Emission from the Exhaust

Sent to Car Experts August 30, 2006 1:20 a.m.

I JUST PURCHASED A 2001 TOYOTA CAMRY ON 19 AUGUST. MY MOTHER SAW A LITTLE WHITE SMOKE COMING OUT OF THE EXHAUST THE SECOND DAY I STARTED UP THE CAR. NOW I AM SEE THE SMOKE MYSELF THROUGH MY REAR VIEW MIRROR AND IT IS NOT JUST A LITTLE PUFF. IT IS LARGE. THEN AFTER I DRY OFF THE SMOKE DISSAPEARS. SOMETHING IS WRONG AND I JUST FEEL SOMETHING IS VERY WRONG. WOULD YOU TELL ME WHAT TO DO NEXT. I TOOK IT BACK TO THE DEALER AND HE SAID I HAD TO DRIVE IT A LON DISTANCE. WHY CAN'T THEY DRIVE IT A LONG DISTANCE.   WE ARE PLANNING TO DRIVE TONEW JERSEY. DO YOU THINK IT IS A GOOD IDEA WITH THE WHITE SMOKE?

I would take it back to the dealer where you bought it, either that or video record the smoke when you are seeing it and take it to them as proof. Sometimes customers think a car is smoking when they start the car in the morning and see smoke. This is usually condensation/steam. That is normal if it goes away after a few miles or so.

If it's doing it when it's warmed up there is a problem. V6 Toyota's especailly the 3.0 engine had head gasket problems so I'd suspect that and have them check the cooling system for HC. Either that or perform a leakdown test.
