Hello!

The best way to repair this type of failure is to replace the entire compressor assembly with a remanufactured one. First, the cost of the clutch components new is often almost as much as the cost of a complete remanufactured compressor including a clutch, and then you will not have to purchase the special tools required to remove and install the clutch components.

Another consideration is that usually the clutch fails because of an internal compressor problem developomg. If the compressor is starting to lock up intermittently during operation, you may not notice it while driving the car but the result is that the clutch components are subjected to an enormous amount of mementary stress which leads to failure of the clutch components. There is always some root cause for a clutch failure; they rarely just fail from normal use.

One other consideration: this vehicle uses R-12 refrigerant, which is rather expensive. If you desire, replacing the compressor is a good time to convert the system to use the cheaper R-134a refrigerant. Replacing the compressor is part of the conversion process, along with installing a new accumulator with R-134a compatible (XH-7) dessicant, and replacing the lubricant in the system with the appropriate PAG oil as specified by the compressor manufacturer.

I hope this is helpful and answers your question; if so, please click my accept button and leave positive feedback! Thanks!
