Power steering issues
Sent to Car Experts August 21 01:02 PM

My 1996 Audi A4 has started making a loud noise when I turn the steering wheel from side to side. The noise also occurs when I accelerate in 1st and 2nd gears, although it is not nearly as loud. The wheel is not any more difficult to turn than before. I checked the power steering fluid and the resivour was empty, so I refilled it, but this has not helped. Could it be something other than the power steering, or could it be damaged since the fluid was so low?

Already Tried:
Refilled the power steering resivoir and got an oil change

Hello, once the power steering reservoir goes low or empty, air gets into the motor and causes a high pitch whining noise.

Once fluid is added to the system the air is not immediately purged from the system. For air to properly bleed from the pump, you must start the car for a few seconds, turn the motor off and let it sit for 5 - 10 minutes. Repeat a couple of times, you will notice it getting quieter. If it is still noisey damage occured to the pump's bearings from lack of lubrication, and will need replacement.

That brings us to why was the res. empty. Raise the car and inspect all the hoses, lines, fittings, Rack and pinion and pump.
