1992 olds 88 scurity light is blinking
Sent to Car Experts August 16 05:25 PM

I have a 1992 olds 88. The security light is blinking. The car starts for about 1 second and then shuts off. I have tried leaving the key ignition on for 10-15 minutes and then trying to restart. That didn't work. The security light is still flashing. I understand I might have a bad key cylinder. But, I don't have the money to get a new cylinder. I have also heard that I can take the 2 wires that are connected to the key cylinder and pull the connector, and then solder a resistor of the same value as the key resistor chip. Problem is...I don't know for sure that I have found the correct 2 wires. What I did find is a yellow plastic sleve with 2 wires inside going from the key cylinder area (can't see up to the key cylinder because of the steering column cover) to a connector. I pulled the connector and soldered a 4.75K resistor to the connector on the engine side. But the security light is still flashing and the car still won't start. Is there something I'm not doing right. Please help !

You need to find the purple/white and the white/black wires in order to install the resistor. The resistor has to be the same resistance as the key.

The pins are E12 and E13 in connector 202. Here is the connector pinout. The yellow sleeve around the wires usually indicates that they are airbag wires. BE VERY CAREFUL!
