Question

cold a/c fades to no cool air

Sent to Car Experts August 08, 2006 9:35 p.m.

2000 Chevrolet 1500 Z/71-5.3 , The a/c works great all moring. It was icy cold until after lunch. Ater lunch the a/c was really cold, I drove about 5 miles and pulled over in the shade to do paper work. After 15 minutes or so cold air started fading away. I noticed the water temp. had risen but not to the red warning mark. I immediately reved the engine to increase air flow. The a/c did not respond by getting cooler.
I made several stops and tried turning the a/c off for 10 to 15 minutes while driving, tha a/c never got cold again. After being parked at home for about 2 hours I restarted and cool air returned.
I recently replaced the fan clutch with a rebuilt life time warranty unit. I suspect the fan clutch. A few days ago when I pushed into passing gear the fan Roared and the a/c got colder. I recently had the a/c checked and the repair shop replaced a Switch pressure ? I think.
I have also experienced the same issue, I was on the Interstate at speed about 70 MPH, when traffic suddenly slowed the cold air faded away as traffic crawled along.
It was doing this even right after being serviced, freon adjusted and switch installed.
Any ideas it was 103 hear today I had to come home early as no a/c cooling.
Thanks, Clint
