Question

I have a 1992 Pontiac Grand Prix"Richard Petty" Edition. I went

Sent to Car Experts August 03, 2006 1:44 p.m.

A couple weeks ago I asked about a power booster replacement that was done on my car. The shop did not give me back my old booster, as requested, so I am unable to have it checked out as your answer had suggested. I am having all kinds of problems with my car now, that I did not have prior to the booster service. These are my symptoms, my low coolant light is on & off all the time, three times I have attempted to drive my car, it feels like my brakes are being applied while I am pushing on the gas padel. The car will not go over 35 miles an hour, I smell a metallic, rubber, burnning smell, my temp. gauge shoots up to the critical stage & the heat comming thru the fire wall is almost unbearable. I have to pull over, shut off the car & get out. This same shop installed a new radiator in my car 1 1/2 yrs. ago. I was looking at the new power booster they put in & I can see all kinds of deep gouge marks on the booster. It looks like someone beat it with a hammer & chisle in two area's. When I first got the car back, they had damaged the brake switch & had to replace it. My question is, did they damage the new booster by pounding on it or could it of been defective from the get go?
I was hoping the same expert that answered my question last time, could respond again. He knew exactly what the problem was & conveyed it to me very clearly so that I was able to understand. Thank you Tonya Marlow (Customer (name blocked for privacy))

Tonya,

It seems like there is a handful of problems, it's so unfortunate. To begin, the booster most definitly could have taken damage if it were improperly installed, or forced. Weren't these elctrical repairs done at another shop than Pepboys? Sounds like an electrical issue with the instrument cluster. But the power loss, doesn't coincide.. I think it's time to take the car to the dealer, for complete, thorough diagnosis. And the dealer needs to be informed of the entire history of the problem from the begining. Also inform Pepboys, they'll be liable for the repairs if the outcome reveals malpractice on their part. This may turn out to be a small claims issue, and I know it may sound too complicating, but it will need to be done in order to get reimbursed for your expenses. You may offer Pepboys a second opprtunity to fix all the concerns, but i'm afraid they might sublet the work to another inferior shop, and just more trouble will arise. You can opt to take it to the dealer, pay for the diagnosis, and when they conclude it was in relation to the Pepboys repairs, you can call Pepboys and see if they would like to pick the bill up, while the car is still getting repaired, or else it's court with the dealer repairs as evidence. Also, speak to the store manager. Let me know if you need further assisstance.
