Question

Buick Ultra High Fuel Pressure

Sent to Car Experts August 03, 2006 9:16 a.m.

This question is for DAVO - CONTINUING PROBLEM WITH BUICK ULTRA HIGH FUEL PRESSURE

The dealer rejected your suggestion. They said they are in contact with GM Master mechanics at GM. They replaced the Fuel Rail and installed new fuel filter. I have the old Rail which has a lot of what looks like metallic dust. After replacement the fuel pressure dropped to 45 lbs. Took car home - drove 4 miles - stopped for fuel - after filling tank - drove 20 yards - "service engine soon light" came back on - went to dealer - 75 lbs pressure. They think filling the tank disturbed contamination in tank. They said it was OK for wife to drive 200 miles to visit her mother - in Wheeling, WVA - would correct problem on her return. Wife called yesterday from Wheeling - car still running but with noticable loss of power - she will take car to Buick dealer in Whelling today - this afternoon - not sure she should try to drive home until problem is corrected or at least looked at by a technician.
QUESTIONS
(1) Old dealer says it's a $500 job to remove fuel tank for cleaning, and it can't be cleaned without removal. Do you agree?
(2) Would you recommend cleaning the tank or installing a new one?
(3) Would you recommend doing anything else while the fuel tank is removed (if that is what has to happen), such as replacement of the fuel pump, etc?
(4) They replaced the old Fuel Rail because, presumably, it cannot be cleaned. No one has said anything yet but I assume I will now need another new Fuel Rail - $645. Do you agree?
(5) We like our Ultra. We like the power of the Supercharger, but this prblem has already cost us $1,107 and is likely to cost another $1,100. It bothers me that the car's design doesn't seem to permit cost effective maintenance - cleaning of the Fuel Rail nor flushing of the fuel tank without removal. Is this a problem with all modern luxuary cars or just the Buick? I ask this because the car has 50,000 miles and we have been thinking of replacing it with another Buick or Cadillac.
(3) My wife plans to come home next Wednesday - plenty of time for the Wheeling dealer to clean the fuel tank

#1 Yes the tank would need to be removed to clean it.My opinion is $500 is kind of high but I don't know your local labor rates.#2 Cleaning your tank would be fine unless there is rust inside then I would replace it or have it coated inside.#3 I would definately replace the pump at that mileage since the tank is out and apparently some type of debris has been going through it.#4 I don't know why they can't flush out the fuel rail for you and I would suggest that they at least try. They should have told you before hand if they were gambling with a $645 part.#5 If you do indeed have some type of debris in the tank clogging the fuel rail,I would like to know why it isn't clogging the inlet of the injectors and causing misfires. The problem you are having is not typical of any car to be honest with you.Maybe someone put something in your tank I don't know.If it can be traced back to a local gas station they are responsible for the repairs.Several years ago one local station had water in their tank and I fixed a few cars that got gas there and they paid the bill.
