Question

283 engine crankcase explosion

Sent to Car Experts July 30, 2006 12:37 p.m.

I added 1/2 of quart. of oil to my 1966 283 impala engine with about 70,000 miles on it and waited about 30 mins. and then crank it over, at that instant the engine made a loud bang with smoke coming out hood . I checked the engine compartment and found that the valve covers, gaskets and hold down studs where blown off!! I assume it possibly was the PCV valve or crankcase ventilation check valve that was installed to back of the 4 bbl. Edelbrock carb that is mounted to Edelbroc aluminum intake, so I replace it and valve cover gaskets. I put everything back together again and the Impala run fine.
I need to know what caused this to happen and how to prevent it from happening again and if the PVC valve is in the correct place.
1966 Impala Sport Coup, stock 283 with Edelbroc carb and manifold and elec. ignition. Have chrome valve covers with chrome breather on the both side and over 70,000 miles
Thanks, Charles

ACCEPTED Check Mark

First thing I would check is Fuel in the Oil. When the Engine is COLD, Pull the Dip Stick & Smell the Oil to see if you smell Gas.
The Fuel Pump Diaphram could be leaking. I have seen this problem on many cars. Sometimes the car will be hard to start, making the person pump the gas, which makes it start & die, start & die.

Hi- I did smell some faint gas smell, but I had to hold it up close to my nose to smell. Then I tried to light the dip stick with a Bic lighter to see if it would ignite - nothing. I want take the fuel pump off and replace it, is there a way to see if the diaphragm is leaking with the fuel pump off? Thanks for your help and I'll release the fund to you. Charlie
