86 Taurus starting problems
Sent to Car Experts October 24 02:29 PM

I'm sorry I had to repost this. I didn't understand the time constraint when I posted it the first time. 86 Taurus, Starts fine when cold but have to hold gas pedal to floor to start once car has warmed up to keep from flooding. It’s the 4 cylinder engine. Problem showed up after I unplugged the fan which is running constantly, but I don't think this is related to the problem.    After starting cold or warm it runs fine. I have tried a new MAPPing sensor, it didn't help. I will check back sooner for your response, thank you.

thanx rick
sound like possably a bad coolant temp sensor.
it should be located in the thermostst housing or close to it .its a 2 wire sensor.pretty easy to replace yourself & its available at most part stores for pretty cheap.
usually a check engine light would be associated with this type of complaint..

hope it helps

Response to RICKANDBOYS's Post: A mechanic checked the temp sensor, I watched the guage as he fiddled with it and it went down when he unplugged it. He also tried a new MAPPing sensor, we talked tonight and thought maybe the
throttle positioning sensor due to the amount of fuel dumped in by the injector. I haven't hooked it up to a diagnostic yet, not sure the car is able to help with this one.
Thanks.

Response to jon_050's Post: Five minutes seems to be enough to make the problem show up. It started after I changed the heater core. It started fine, I let it warm up to see if the core was working properly, it was so I shut it off, then unplugged the fan and tried to restart, that is when it all began. I've tried it with fan plugged in and unplugged, no difference. Mechanic looking at it is a Ford mech.

I replaced the coolant temp sensor, didn't work. I haven't been able to locate a multi-function relay at a parts store, just at the dealer and they have them for $140, and the adaptor harness for another $40 because the whole unit has been changed. I can't find one on the web, no parts stores have them online anywhere, are you sure they are available aftermarket? I'm thinking of going to a salvage yard but can't get there until wednesday. Thanks.

They are called a "Radiator Fan Controller" at the parts houses. (haven't got a clue why) they will need the oem number to match it up. They are available at O'reilly's parts houses, so I would assume Autozone or NAPA would also carry them. Cost on them are around $100.00. I would go the salvage route myself on a vehicle that old.

Not sure the status of my question. Starting problem 86 Taurus, 2.5 liter. Starts fine cold, warmed up have to hold throttle to floor to avoid flooding. Fan runs continuously, started doing that before the starting problem cropped up, I changed the heater core and starting problem showed up. I've checked connections to see if that was causing problem but cannot find any bad connections. Have changed coolant temp sensor and multi-function relay/radiator fan controller, nothing has changed.
