Question

1994 Toyota Camry LE 4 cylinder cranky.

Sent to Car Experts October 19, 2004 12:27 p.m.

1994 Toyota Camry LE 4 cylinder cranky.
It started 2 weeks ago, after I started the car, the starter won¡¯t stop. I turned off the switch,

removed the key, it kept cranking for another 10 seconds.
I have remote starter (with start inhibilitation) installed in this car a year ago. I thought

something was wrong with the start switch. I used remote start instead. A week later, it happened

again with remote start, the key start was not used.
Then it developed another symptom, when I turned the key to start, there is a click in engine

compartment and the start motor won¡¯t run.
I removed the solenoid connector and connect the 12Volt supply directly to starter, it clicks and

won¡¯t run. It will run maybe 1 out of 8 times.
I know now the starter has some problem too. I am going to replace my starter.

But my main concern is: why it was cranky in the first place? Was it because the starter had some

problem or the control (relay) part has problem. If I replace the starter assembly, will the cranky

thing continue?

Sounds like the starter solenoid is stuck/bad or for some reason your remote-start wiring is giving some extra juice to the starter. I would also change or switch the relay (with an identical relay in the box) just to eliminate the relay. Switching relays along with a new starter should cure everything. If not, look at the remote wiring or temporairly disconnect it at the starter when you install the new starter just to see if it works fine with just the key-switch. Then re-connect remote start and cross fingers.
