what are the signs of an engine going bad?

I went to start my car and all i heard was a click, I was told it could be the starter or my engine is locked.I have a 97 grad am with only 88,000 original miles on it. It was running like a dream no noises whatsoever and no smoking. two day ago It took two trys to start it.
