99 Jetta gas odor when driving

i have 1999 volkvagon jetta with 2.0 lt auto . The problem I am having is that I get an intermintent smell of gas when I am driving. I only notice it when I have the a/c on. any one lead in the correct direction. I have checked the gas cap it is on tight. I looked at the engine it has no aparent leaks.

Honestly I think you smell unburned fuel. i would check the timing.

Well, things wiggle loose. You have to get a timing light . The timing light has 3 leads. One goes to the positive terminal, One goes to the negative terminal and the last lead goes to the number 1 plug wire. the light will strobe. the strobe represents the number 1 plug firing. You point that strobe light at the timing indicator of the front of the engine near the front pulley. You should see a line that points to a pointer on the side of the timing belt cover. those marks indicate at what degree the motor is timed.
