Loud noise and burning smell
Sent to Car Experts July 09 08:03 PM

Yesterday, the air conditioner stopped cooling while I was driving. I turned it off for a few minutes and back on. It starting working again. However, when I parked the car I noticed a very strong burning smell in the garage. The next morning when I started the car I heard a loud grinding/whining noise coming from the front, accompanied by the burning smell.

You need to look under the hood and see if your belt is still intact and if everything seems to be turning okay with it.

Reply to BOBBY's Post: I just doublechecked and all the belts look okay. I just had them replaced within the last six months. Same with the brakes. I started the car to check it again and the smell is like burning gas. I have a problem with the gas gauge sticking. Even when it's full, sometimes the light will come on and it'll bob down to half a tank and then quickly go back to full. Could that have anything to do with this problem? I'm afraid to drive it with that gas smell.

I don't think your gas gauge has anything to do with it. Does your check engine light come on? Does the car still make the noise or do you only have the smell now?

Reply to BOBBY's Post: Still makes the noise, still has the smell. No lights that show that anything is wrong. I've checked under the hood and under the car, even the tires, to see if there's anything remotely weird going on. I don't see anything odd.

Does this noise happen when the car is just sitting there idling or only when the vehicle is in motion?

Reply to BOBBY's Post: As soon as I turn on the ignition. Sound continues from there whether I put it in gear, accelerate, etc. It's just constant.

Does the noise appear to be coming from the belt area?
