I have a 96 Pontiac Grand Am SE w/ 2.4L. Has had a slow coolant leak since I bought it. I always smelled it in the car and assumed it was the heater core. Eventually I had the heater core replaced. The smell inside disappeared but still occassionally had to add coolant. Tempature guage would occassionally show variation. So I decided to change the thermostat. When I pulled the coolant flange to the block there was no thermostat. But a small or narrow O-ring that was the seal and was possibly the source of the leak. I had previously had the cars system pressure checked by it didn't show any pressure loss. But I wasn't surprised since the leak is so slow. My question I guess is Do some cars now days not have thermostats. The oil checks clean. The car runs great and gets great mileage. And has had professional care regular. But this little problem has been frustrating. Any help?

The thermostat on that engine is under the car in the lower radiator pipe.If you removed the upper one all you will see is the gasket.
