Volvo 940 Turbo 1991

Now have 340K miles....still runs like a top. Normally cranks and starts after about 7-10 cranks....now cranks but not starting. Battery replaced.... Starts periodically like before but then after a day or so of no driving. Acts up again and does not start. I will try 4-6 times then let it sit..sometimes until the next day. It may then start again. Any ideas? Dont want to spend a fortune for a mechanic to run me over the coals with a car only worth $500...but still a great vehicle for around the town. Thanks Reply to Paul@s2000win.com

Reply to Bill's Post: No howl. Is there a gas filter that can be replaced...I'd like to start with the least expensive options...prior to replacing the entire electronic fuel injection system

There is it is located under car next to pressure fuel pump in a carriage . if you follow fuel lines from tank to engine its your next stop. before replacing filter open line have suitable container and cylce key see if you get fuel. you have 2 fuel pumps one in tank and another for pressure if no fuel check fuses and relays if okay probably bad pump(s)

vac issues while car is running spray potential leaks with either carb cleaner or use unlit propane torch listen for idle change .back to before your better off if it doesn,t start. then find the basicissue either no spark or nof fuel then go from there

Reply to Bill's Post: Bill, Over the last two days the car has started successfully...then after sitting 2-3 hrs has not been able to be started after trying 5-7 times allowing it to crank 5-10 seconds each time.

What do you make of this type of intermittant issue? I'm not clear about your recommendation.

when the car is in a no start condition check to see if you have spark at plugs, if no check at coil if you have spark check for fuel and fuel pressure this will lead you to where the problem is. No spark look for an ignition issue , no fuel look for fuel pump or fuel issue. Let me know.

Reply to Bill's Post: Thanks Bill,
Since I am not a mechanic and able to work on my own car ..I cant try these ideas myself ..but at least I can prompt the mechanic as to what should be done...so I dont feel like I am stuck.

If you have a spark tester (if not you can purchase one fairly cheap at any auto parts store ) most will be glad to show you how to hook up depending on type. next time it fails to start check for spark. Simple fuel pump is to cycle key several times so you here pump run before turning over then crank, does it start before 7+ cranks as usual if so fuel may be an issue.

Yes, there should be a humm from underneath car for main pump and if you can have someone listen to gas tank with cap removed should hear that one as well. it will only run for a second or two once key is put into on posisiton.
