A wheel bearing does not produce a rattling noise; when a wheel bearing becomes worn it will produce a loud humming or growling noise which changes in pitch and intensity as the vehicle is steered back and forth while moving (shifting weight onto the worn bearing makes it louder).
There are 2 common sources in the rear of this vehicle design that can produce rattling noises:
(1) Shock mounts. The shocks in the rear have rubber mounts/ bushings at each end; if one is worn or the bolts are not fully tightened, it will produce a rattle over bumps.
(2) I believe this model has a straight beam type of axle in the rear suspension. The design used by chrysler for many years incorporated a torsion bar inside the rear axle. Occasionally, these torsion bars can break and produce a loud annoying metallic rattle over bumps that can be difficult to locate.
If you raise the rear of the vehicle and look at the underside of the rear axle (which looks like a long U-shaped metal tube running from one wheel to the other), you will see a heavy steel bar located inside the tube. Examine it closely for any breaks; try moving it with a pry bar (it should not move). If this is broken, you have found the source of your noise.
I recall searching for a similiar noise on a Dodge for 2 days once untill finding a broken torsion bar inside the rear axle!
(3) Exhaust ratles against the floor are a common occurrence on all cars; try moderately shaking the tail pipe to see if it produces a sound similiar to what you are hearing.
(4) Items inside the trunk (jack, tire iron, etc) that are not tightly fastened down can produce a noise that sounds like a suspension rattle.
(5) A loose rear bumpre mount or other body component can produce a rattle; try bouncing the car while it is sitting still to see if you can produce the noise. If you can, have a friend bounce the car while you look underneath to try to isolate the point the noise is originating from.
I hope this is helpful; if so, please click my accept button! Thanks!
