I just bought a 1987 Olsdmobile 442 with 11,000 original miles. The car came from New York, one owner. The service engine soon light comes on so I had a mechanic run diagnostic and came up with codes 13 and 21. I replaced oxygen sensor but not TPS sensor, light still on. Because the car sat for long periods of time and was not driven can I drive it on the highway, open it up, or would thiis cause damage to car??

Optional Information:
1987 Oldsmobile 442 307 v8

Already Tried:
everything on car is original except battery, and now a bosch oxygen sensor. Can I put in an additive? Filled w/premium gas

This sounds like a nice car with such low mileage!

I would first back-flush the coolant system, renew the antifreeze, change the oil, and filter. Check and replace the air filter if needed. If the fuel filter has not been changed in a long time, replace it. Once you have done this you can take it out for a good run. Monitor your gauges, stop, and check under the hood occasionally. I would not get too worried about "codes" and that sort of thing at this point. The anti-freeze alone can be contaminated and setting off a code. Anti-freeze can become an acid which will do harm if not changed periodically. This is why I recommended changing the oil, anti-freeze etc. Once the engine has been run at normal operating temperature then you can begin evaluating the overall condition. You would be better off getting a few miles on it to make a good evaluation.

Good Luck! With your new acquisition....

Reply to Dan's Post: I changed the oil to mobil 1 synthetic and oil filter and air filter to k&n? The car is sucking gas like crazy. I dont mind doing a couple more things. How critical is the TPS sensor. Thats what came up on diagnostic.
