Opps, already answered... Here, I'll cut and paste here too for you.
The cam is a shaft with lobes on it. It turns in time with the crankshaft via timing belt or chain, or gears. The cam is what pushes on either the lifters or pushrods. Which push on your rocker arms.. Which open your valves. Your engine should have two overhead cams, one intake cam (controls the intake valves) and one exhaust cam (exhaust valves). Overhead cam means your camshaft(s) are in the head. Otherwise they are located in the engine block.
