Bravada Whistle

My 97 Olds Bravada whistles when started and seems to lower in decibel as it warms up. Once she is warmed up and am driving, she seems to chug down the highway and seems to loose power. It did not die out or anything, but it wanted to. I also notice the fuel gage fluctuating back and forth and was not consistant. I tried fuel injection cleaner which seemed to help but not for long and is doing the same thing again. I don't want to take it in and get the wrong diagnosis which has happened way to many times already with other cars I have taken in for repairs at various garages here in Wisconsin. I just want it running well. She idles around 500rpm when warm and the engine runs slightly rough at that rpm if that helps, and noticed that turning on the air conditioning helps that feel of wanting to die out. Any suggestions?

The whistle is not coming from the belts. It sounds as if it is coming directly below the car. Example, I drove from Il. to Wisconsin last week and it whistled on the start. It stayed whistling on the highway and noticed lack of power, chugging, hesitation. Gages were irratic the entire time, including temp. and battery. 20 miles before I got home after a 100 mile trip, it smoothed out and ran fine till I got home. The only thing consistant was my oil pressure gage which stayed steady at 60 on the highway. My brother mentioned that day that is sounded like fuel pump whine. Is that possible?

I will check it out and go into the garage and do as you suggested. Thank you.

I tried what you asked and was not able to adjust the speed where you mentioned, but it did go up another 50 rpms and that seemed better. I will take it in and have them test it to see what's up. When I started it tonight, the whistle was gone, but it has done that before. That is why the fuel pump mention from my brother. Thanks guy.

When it is whistling open up the fuel cap and listen inside the fuel tank.( thats where your pump is located) If that is where the noise is located you probably have a fuel pump problem. ( running at low pressure)Change your fuel filter and have the pressure tested at the fuel rail to see if it is in spec. Also the catalytic converter may be tring to stop up and restricting the exhaust flow.

Response to bestservices's Post: I will go out and check it out and see if that is where it is coming from. I listened last night and it did sound as if it is coming from underneath the car, more towards the back. I will have to open the cap and see if that is indeed where it is originating from.
