You need to first test a few functions during the failure.

1) Test for spark at the plug end of the wire using a spark tester. If none found, check for power supply on the + terminal of the coil with the key on.

2) Test for injecter pulse using a small bulb called a noid light. If none found, check for power supply at one side of the injecter with the key on.

3) Use a fuel pressure gauge to test for correct fuel pressure, also noticing if the pressure holds when key is shut off.

Once you have determined which of these functions has dropped out,
you will know which system is having the problem.

Here's what the noid light looks like.

Reply to Hammer Time's Post: I keep being told it is my timing belt. There is a spark and the fuel pump turns on when key turned. How do I know it isn't the timing belt? If it is, is it worth replacing now, or should I call it a loss?

You would need to either remove the timing belt covers, which may be a fair amount of work and check the timing marks of do a complete compression test.

The one concern you have is that is what's called an "interference engine". That means that serious damage can be done when the belt breaks but that does not always happen. You won't know this until the belt is replaced. The car is a 98 so I would expect it to be worth repairing but you know the condition of the car and I don't. If the valves are damaged from the timing belt breaking, the repair could run well over $1,000.
