First you should check all that applies to the power loss.

This includes:

sparkplugs/wires(done)

converter(done)

fuel pump(done)

fuel filter

Distributor cap and rotor

distributor

air filter

PCV valve

fuel pressure

MAP/MAF sensors

and if all the above checks out ok, then the culprit is the transmission. My bet, is the transmission. You can maybe try to ovehaul it, but that is a decision that has to be done by whoever opens it.

Yes(the transmission had very high mileage). If all checks out ok, then you would need to do testing on the transmission. Unless, you think that the transmission is the culprit, then go straight to doing a pressure test on it.

When was the last time you changed the fluid and filter? This is actually similar to my wife's car issue right now. When you let go off the accelerator, it feels like you mentioned(that something is pulling it). This is because we haven't changed the fluid and filter. This may also be the culprit to your issue.

  • Also, make sure that you dont have the e-brake engaged, and also check for to make sure that the brakes arent dragging.

I would suggest having the tranmission purged, BUT make sure to have them put some of the oil fluid back in. I have seen many transmissions that after they put in new fluid, within a couple of months they break down. This is caused by the new fluid which has many detergents that break the seals. SO make sure that if this is done, to put back in a little under half of the old fluid.

let me know if you have further questions.

Reply to 32roadster's Post: This 91 ford range truck DOES NOT have an automatic transmission. It is 5 speed manuel transmission with clutch. I don,t think you change fulid and filter on manual transmissions. Also the engine backs down with transmission in gear brake on and release clutch and accelarate. Not a miss just won,t take gas.

first, im sorry about my misunderstanding. For some reason I just kep on thinking auto transmission.

When does this happen. is it in all gears?

have you tried starting in a different gear?from what you said about the engine backing down, it sounds like the MAF sensor may be causing this.

Reply to 32roadster's Post: The last time I drove truck I went about 10 miles to muffler shop to get exhast checked. I went through all gears ok, except it would not go very fast in any gear, about 45 mile/hr in 5th gear. On way back home it was bad,I almost didn't make make it.I had to keep down shifting to have enough power to go at all. The last mile, mostly up hill was in 1st gear with gas to floor. engine lite came on,and went off when I got home turned it off and recranked it.I will have to find out what sensor is and how to chech it. thanks Jim

I would suggest having the codes checked. The PCM can give us a hint or even tell us what is the culprit. I wish you were in IL, I would pull them for you, since I have a scanner compatible of checking ford OBD1 vehicles. This almost sounds like fouled spark plugs, but thats not it, since they are new, unless you didnt tighten them to spec.

Another thing you can verify is the fuel pressure. This can also be the cause of a faulty fuel pump.

A suggestion was made to me(by another expert), that maybe the timing is way out, or it maybe jumped a tooth. What do you think about this suggestion?

ps- make sure to refresh the webpage everytime before you leave.(if I am online)
