Question

1988 chevy S-10; missing housing typically mounted to throttle body

Sent to Car Experts August 06, 2004 1:13 p.m.

Yr 188 Chevy S-10: I just took my car into a new mechanic for a loose steering problem. When he opened the hood, he noticed that the housing that is mounted to the throttle body is missing (the hose is still there). I told him that the last time I took my car for service was one year ago. Question: Please tell me how important is it to the engine's life span to have a missing housing unit? I would like to verify what I was told. Thank you.

I'm not sure what you are refering to. are you talking about the collar that sits between the throttle body and air filter that has a hose running to the valve cover?

It is the cover to the throttle body that connects to the air filter. It is secured by a wing nut. The hose is still in place.

Rejected MercyAutoClinic's Post. Reason Given: The point is that since the cover is gone, an air filter cannot be installed. Hence, dirty air is going straight into the fuel injector mechanism. The comment re driving an 1988 chevy does not answer the question. It had a new motor in 1997 and is used by a medical student.

You need to have all of these in place. Not only are you allowing dirt and water to enter the throttle body ( and consequently into your combustion chamber ) you are drawing dirt through the hose back into your valve cover and into your oil. In short you need to replace it.
