Mercedez 190E 2.3 1986 starter problem

Sent to Car Experts August 05, 2004 7:25 p.m.

When my 1986 mercedez 190E 2.3 wouldnt start (went 'clug' with plenty of elec power), I had it replaced with an OEM piece. Almost immediately it began to act weird. It would continue to 'run' long after I started the car, or if it did not 'catch' on first turn, it would continue to run for about 3 to 5 minutes. On second day it began to smoke slightly. I disconnected battery to stop it. Now if I try to reconnect battery it immediately 'runs'.. Note it turns WITHOUT popping out to the fly wheel. It runs for a while then slowy dies off. Is the problem in the starter, or the wiring or somewhere in that circuit. Should I attempt to replace the starter myself?

it happened to me too..just go to the store and return it for a bad starter and now when you install this one put the wires right. I think that is what i did..I put the wires wrong...seems that the little wire that is there at the starter is touching the big possittive wire from the batery..do the starter yourself but read in the book to make sure you put it right...go to a autozone store or related and look in the books there(without buying the book..is expensive) how to do it..or go to a lybrary and find a book for that car or auotzone.com has a lot of car repairs information..maybe you find your car there under the "repair info" or symilar
