Car stereo problems

I just recently bought a 1995 Plymouth Neon. The inside dome lights do not work and the car stereo did not work. The car stereo that came with the Neon appeared to be pushed in at an odd angle so I bought a brand new one and my dad installed it for me. It still does not work. My dad checked all the fuses and everything seems ok. Could the two problems be related or are they separate and how can I get the blasted stereo to work? I must have my music! Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
