1965 Mustang, 289 engine
It was restored 4 years ago with a new alternator and regulator. The lights flicker during idle. Sometimes the alternator light will flash on and off. A check of the new alternator and regulator indicated no problem. The ground strap between the engine and frame/body with clean connections did not help. Any suggestions?

This might sound stupid, but when you tested the alternator did you test it at the alternator or at the battery. Maybe try testing the battery.

The alternator was tested at a parts store on a tester and it was ok.

The car has 5000 miles on it since restoration. The battery was new and is fully charged and the alternator keeps it fully charged. There is no problem with the operation of the car except the slight flickering lights on idle. Generally this is caused by faulty grounds, except that I cannot find any problems with the grounds.   Idling speed is slightly on the fast side. Different regulators did not help. Could it possibly be the alternator even though it tested ok on the tester at the parts store.

There are no shorts in the wiring and all grounds have beeen cleaned and reattached. The alternator was new from Auto Zone and they tested it. I do not know how they calibrate the tester. Thanks for your information but everything you have suggested, I have already done. I am restoring a second 1965 Mustang and it needs a new alternator. I will switch alternators in the Spring to eliminate the possibility.
