i'd like to learn how to tune up my own car ... a 1994 mercury sable ls, 3.8l v6. my mother gave it to me because she doesn't drive anymore. it has only 43,000 original miles, body and interior flawless, but it needs a tune up. are their any 'dummy' style manuals for car tune ups?

Thanks for the question. There are many books out there on this. But really, if you're mechanically inclined at all, this would be ok to do on your own.

You'll need for this car as a basic tuneup:

1. spark plugs (Motorcraft)

2. air filter

3. Fuel filter

4. PCV valve

5. Spark Plug wires, if any of them are split or cut or oily.

6. Dist Cap and rotor would be a good thing to get also.

7. Change oil and filter

8. Check the Serpentine belt for any severe cracks or chunks missing.

9. Clean the battery terminals.

That's about it.

Does it run ok? Does it smoke?

One thing to watch out on these cars, they had head gasket problems.

Thanks
